Essential Social Media & Vlogging Kit: What’s Always in My Bag (and Why)

Updated: Feb 6

If you work in social media, content creation or just want to start sharing more video for your business, you’ll know that having the right kit makes everything easier.

I’ve tested a lot over kit the years, some spenny and some surprisingly affordable. The result? Here’s what I always keep in my bag for those unplanned moments, quick shoots, or when I’m out and about in London.

Why these?

Don't get me wrong, I’ve got expensive kit for big shoots or longer form content, but for everyday moments, these are all affordable, easy to use and genuinely make my life easier.

There are loads of options out there, but these are the ones I actually use and recommend for anyone getting started or wanting a backup kit for spontaneous content.

If you’re a small business owner, freelancer, blogger, vlogger or social media manager, this is a solid starter kit you can build on as you go.

Full disclosure: there are plenty of retailers out there, but if you’re thinking of picking up any of these items and want to support a small business, my Amazon affiliate link is here. It doesn’t cost you anything extra, but I’ll earn a small commission if you buy via my link.

1. Wireless Lavalier Microphone for your Smartphone

I keep these in my kit bag because they’re small, light and do the job. Plug-and-play with iPhone, iPad or Android (USB-C and Lightning), no apps needed. They’re not a replacement for my pro Rode mics, but for quick interviews, Reels, or impromptu stories, they’re brilliant. At under £20, if I lose one it’s not the end of the world.

2. Tall, Lightweight Tripod with Light

This tripod is really tall, super light and folds down small enough to fit in my bag. The detachable light has a few settings so you can film indoors or in low light. It works for phones, cameras and GoPros. I use it for filming myself, group shots, and anything where I need a steady shot or better lighting.

3. Magnetic Selfie Fisheye Mirror

If you want to use your phone’s best camera (not the selfie lens) but still see yourself, this fisheye mirror is a game changer. It’s tiny, strong and doesn’t need charging. I snap the metal ring onto my phone case and the magnet keeps it in place. Great for vlogs, Reels, or even checking your framing on the go.

4. Smartphone Case with Cord

I love this case because I’m often on boats or out in the street filming, and I don’t want to drop my phone. The cord gives me peace of mind—especially in busy places or if I’ve got my hands full. It’s also handy if you’ve got kids or you’re juggling a million things. Not foolproof for security, but it definitely slows down any would-be phone snatchers.
